Copper thieves nabbed

The police spotted the men in the bush while responding to another complaint.

SERGEANT Desmond Theunissen from the K9 unit, Port Shepstone, together with Warrant Officer Harry Rheeder and Constable Chantel Goddan from Southport police were attending to a complaint in the Sunwich Port area on Wednesday this week, when they noticed something suspicious in the bush. They approached on foot and saw two men burning what appeared to be Eskom cable.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said that the two men, aged 28 and 39 were arrested on the spot. “Bolt cutters and other housebreaking devices were found in their possession. The men also had items that were connected to housebreaking cases in the Umzumbe area.

“Investigations revealed that the two are from the Eshowe and Melmoth areas,” said Lt-Col Wiid. The men are in custody and face charges of theft and possession of stolen property. Investigations are continuing.
