Swimmers upset over pool delays

The swimming pools should be fully operational by this Friday.

The municipality has been forced to shut down three major swimming pools on the South Coast.

The Margate Olympic, Marburg and Gamalakhe pools have been closed for several weeks which has business owners and others in Margate, who have invested in property in the town, desperate for something to be done before the December holidays.

Residents of Margate highlighted the closure of the pool recently, after not having any pool to swim in.

“We live in Margate and had to resort to going to Marburg, which has a beautiful pool. For several weeks we drove to Marburg and enjoyed our swim. We arrive at the Marburg pool last week and the pool was green. It’s important that we protect and maintain these facilities for locals and visitors,” said a regular swimmer from Margate.

Regarding the Margate Olympic swimming pool, Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, said about two months ago, the pool at Margate had two new motors fitted to the existing filtration system as both old motors were damaged beyond repair by the pump house being flooded during the April rains this year.

The Margate Olympic swimming pool has been closed for two months.

“This was delayed by the fact that the new 2019/2020 capital budget had to be used. After the motors were replaced and had been run for a day or two, it became clear that both pumps also required a general overhaul. The work to fix the two pumps is underway and should be completed by the end of this week. Once this is done, the pool will be opened for use.”

The Marburg and Gamalakhe swimming pools, which have turned green, is due to the delay in obtaining granular chlorine for the pools.

“The new process of obtaining the chemicals took longer than was anticipated. I can, however, indicate that we are expecting delivery of these chemicals by Wednesday (yesterday), which means the Marburg and Gamalakhe swimming pools should be fully operational by this Friday. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by these glitches and are determined to ensure that they don’t reoccur,” Mr April said.
