St Martin de Porres team makes the shortlist

The gymnasts were finalists in the developing school team of the year category.

The KwaZulu-Natal, Department of Sport and Recreation celebrated 25 years of sporting excellence at an event held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban last Saturday.

The awards recognise and acknowledge the success and commitment of provincial athletes, coaches, administrators and sport and recreation bodies.

Hlengiwe Mavimbela the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation was the host at the event.

The St Martin de Porres school gymnastics team was shortlisted as a finalist in the developing school team of the year category.

Gymnasts from the team were excited to mingle with famous athletes like Bongiwe Msomi the international netball player, and Charles Philips who won the award for sportsman of the year with a disability.

The school would like to thank and acknowledge the Department of Education and the Department of Sport and Recreation especially Collin Mehlwana and Mlungisi Luthuli for their hard work and dedication in promoting sport in schools.

The school also acknowledges the contribution of Bongiwe Ngcungama the district and provincial gymnastics coordinator for supporting and motivating the school’s gymnastics team and the parents and coaches.

The team will represent the Ugu District at the provincial championships on October 18 to 20.
