Policeman killed in Hibberdene crash

A second officer was injured, as was the driver of a private vehicle.

A collision on the R102 near the Hlungwa bridge, just before the Hibberdene offramp, claimed the life of a policeman this morning (Sunday).

Glen Preston of Med-Evac Emergency Service said the accident involved a private vehicle and a police vehicle.

“An officer died and a second suffered moderate injuries and was taken to hospital by Med-Evac. The driver of the private vehicle sustained minor injuries,” he said.

When the Herald asked Captain Petros Mpinge from Port Shepstone police station for comment, he referred the journalist to Saps KwaZulu-Natal Media.

In a separate crash, Kwazulu Private Ambulance service responded to an accident on the Gamalakhe Road  this afternoon.

Spokesman Craig Botha  said paramedics found a badly damaged vehicle which had left the road.

“One patient was critically injured and two were seriously injured. Advanced life support stabilised the critical patient while the other patients were being treated. All were transported to hospital.”

Mr Botha said the driver of the vehicle had run away before emergency services arrived.
