Life sentence for raping stepdaughter

In October last year the mother wanted to drop the charges.

The Port Shepstone Regional Court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to life behind bars for raping his 12-year-old stepdaughter.

The child was at home in Woza Ward, KwaNzimakwe during the December 2017 school holidays when the first rape took place while her mother was at work.

The second incident occurred on February 22 last year when the woman sent her daughter to another building on the property.

When the girl entered the room the man raped her again.

It was heard in court that the mother had become worried when the child took some time to return.

When she went to check on her daughter, she saw that the girl’s underwear was around her knees and her skirt was hiked up.

When she questioned the girl, she said her stepfather had raped her. The mother confided in her pastor who confronted the man.

He confessed to raping the child.

Police were called and the man was arrested.

The investigating officer, Constable Zinhle Fortunate Hlophe of Margate Saps Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) said the case become very difficult in October last year when the mother wanted to drop the charges.

“This however was not entertained by the public prosecutor as the victim was still young and the case continued,” said Ms Hlophe.

Margate Saps station commander, Brigadier William Slabbert welcomed the sentence and commended Const Hlophe and her team for ensuring the rapist was brought to book.
