Margate Moves: Time to clean and burn

It is a great community initiative. Be part of it.

CALLING all Ramsgate residents. It is your turn to pitch up at for the big beach bonfire. Volunteers have cleaned up the flood debris at Margate and Shelly Beach and this Saturday, June 1 from 3pm the community is asked to pick up the wood that has washed up on the beach, make a huge pyre and set it alight. Everyone is asked to donate R20 (this will go to the SPCA) and you can win some fabulous prizes. Those who donate R50 get a blanket from Gift of the Givers.

Plain or purl

The Ramsgate Knit Twits invite everyone to take part in `World Wide Knit and Crochet in Public Day’. It takes place at the Ramsgate Whale Deck Enviro Centre next Saturday, June 8 from 9am to midday.

Take along your latest project or your knitting needles/crochet hook for a fun morning of yarn bombing.

Chairs will be provided along with knitting or crochet lessons. Any donations of yarn will be most welcome.

Tea and/or coffee, as well as prego rolls, will be offered for sale by the Ramsgate Conservancy.

Floral fantasy

For a blooming good time visit the floral expo at the Margate Methodist Church Hall. That is where the South Coast Floral Art Club will hold its annual Floral Show on Tuesday, June 4 from 9am.

Qualified judge, Helia Groenewald will give a few floral demonstrations and there will an exhibition of the members’ exquisite work.

Along with the flower arrangements, there will also be entertainment, delicious tea and snacks and a lucky draw offering great prizes. Entry is R50 per person. For details contact Saroj Pillay at 071 6828781.

On a musical note

Over the next few weeks, locals will be spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment.

Take a nostalgic musical journey with local outfit `The Gentry’ at Margate Retirement Village. `Driving Miss Daisy’ is the next supper theatre offering at the Azalea Hall and the date to diarise is Saturday, June 22. Pack a picnic supper and your own liquid refreshments and head off to the village. Doors open at 6pm and the fabulous entertainment starts at 7pm. Tickets at R80 per person are on sale from the admin or RAC offices at the village – phone 039 312 5000 to book.

Sing out loud

`A Song For Everyone’ is the well-named concert series presented by the Hibiscus Choir. If choral music is your thing – don’t miss these shows. The first concert takes place at the Margate Methodist Church Hall on Saturday, June 15 at 2.30pm. This will be followed by a show at Ramsgate Retirement Village on the 19th also at 2.30pm and an evening concert at Ramsgate Lions’ Club’s community centre on the 21st at 6.30pm with the grand finale being staged at the Village Bowling Club (Margate Retirement Village) on the 25th at 6.30pm.

Sunday soiree

A wonderful selection of classical music will be on offer at Riverbend Crocodile Farm next Sunday (9th) from 2.30pm.

World-class musicians Elena and Boris Kerimov will form a string trio with David Snaith to entertain. Tickets at R120 per person are on sale from the farm’s reception (9am to 4.30pm).

Tea or coffee and cream scones will be available during the interval at R32.

There will also be a cash bar.

Rocking the ridge

Ramsgate’s iconic music venue Rocky Ridge is hosting one of the country’s top muso’s Guy Buttery this Saturday (1st). Multi-instrumentalist Buttery has been invited to perform all over the world.

Entry is R100 per person and the venue and kitchen will open at 6pm. The music gets underway from 8pm.

Surf’s up

South Shore Surf Club holds its Retro Surfing Classic at Ramsgate’s Ski-boat Bay this Saturday (1st) from 8am. Go along and watch the wave riders tame the tubes.

Put on those thinking caps

As it is the last Friday of the month it is `Braai and Brain Evening’ with the Ramsgate Lions. Get to the Community Centre in Glenmarkie Drive from 6pm – take some meat and your own drinks – salads are on sale at R30. After supper, it is quiz time where the brainy bunch can win great prizes. Condolences

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Hans van der Waal who died last Saturday. His daughter Carla Cowden was the last Hibiscus Queen to be crowned in Margate. And also to the best-known Hibiscus Queen Penny Rey (Coelen), who wore the crown in 1958 before going on to win the Miss World title, her husband Mickey died last week.
