Margate Moves: Collect and burn for animal shelter

All the wood that has been washed up on the beach will be collected by volunteers who will build a huge pile to make a bonfire.

EVERYONE is invited to help clean up Margate beach this Saturday, May 18 from 8.30am. All the wood that has been washed up on the beach will be collected by volunteers who will build a huge pile to make a bonfire.

And for a R20 donation, which will go towards the Lower South Coast SPCA, you can enter the lucky draw where some great prizes can be won.

If you are suffering from election burn-out, the best cure is music. The Durban City Orchestra which comprises about 50 members, who are both amateur and experienced and professional musicians will make their debut appearance in Margate this Saturday (18th). Their repertoire combines classical and symphonic genres with popular and contemporary styles. The orchestra, which has been in existence for 130 years, will perform at the Azalea Hall at Margate Retirement Village at 6.30pm. Jane Froman was a popular American singer whose career spanned more than 30 years. Her life story was told in the 1952 film `With A Song In My Heart’ where she was portrayed by Susan Hayward who received an Academy Award nomination for the role. This great, classic movie will be screened at the Ronnie Baker Hall at Margate Retirement Village this Sunday (19th) at 2.30pm. Meet Oom Schalk

Herman Charles Bosman is regarded by many as one of the country’s greatest storytellers and his tales about the `Groot Marico’ area are spellbinding.

Talented local actor, Barbie Meyer, who is passionate about the author, will once again transform herself into Oom Schalk Lourens to help raise funds for South Coast Hospice.

The show, `Marico Moon’ will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Hibiscus at the Ramsgate Lions Club’s community hall in Glenmarkie Road, Ramsgate next Friday, May 24 at 6pm. Tickets cost R300 which includes a traditional three-course `boerekos’ meal. Take note there are no bar facilities so you will need to bring your own. Magical music

Members of the Hibiscus Choir are in rehearsals for their forthcoming concert series `A Song for Everyone’ scheduled for next month. The first show takes place at the Margate Methodist Church Hall on Saturday, June 15 at 2.30pm. This will be followed by a show at Ramsgate Retirement Village on the 19th also at 2.30pm and there’s an evening concert at Ramsgate Lions’ Club’s community centre on the 21st at 6.30pm and at the Village Bowling Club (Margate Retirement Village) on the 25th at 6.30pm.
