Tweni Talk: Litterbugs relish the dark of night

A complete cow hide and feet were dumped behind the recycling bins on Commercial Drive.

RECENTLY the public was invited to Umthunzi Hotel and Conference in Umtentweni to meet with all stakeholders to discuss a way forward in the fight against littering. All the heavyweights were there, photos were taken and everyone committed to fighting the good fight against litter.

Apparently word did not filter down the ranks to those men and women on the ground, because on Monday this week (18th) at precisely 10.08am, a municipal truck parked close to the recycling bins on Commercial Road and two men calmly removed a couple of broken windscreens before dumping the balance onto the parking lot. It is a disgrace that residents are subjected to this type of littering. This major road – and Umtentweni generally – has become a convenient dumpsite, so much so that Derrick Morris said when investigating a bad smell near the bins, he discovered a complete cow hide and feet dumped behind the bins. A lot of illegal dumping is done under the cover of darkness and it is so frustrating that cameras are not always able to capture the act.

Calling all hikers

Avid walkers and hikers take note. On behalf of the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Sea Park, Sonja Dickens reports that the first breakfast talk of the year will take place in the parish hall on Saturday, March 30 at 8am. Gavin Phyfer will present a talk about the Abbot Pfanner Trappist Trail – one of the only long-distance pilgrim trails in South Africa. The trail meanders through a number of Mariannhill missions and their beautiful churches, established by Abbot Pfanner and his monks in the southern regions of KZN over a period of 20 years from 1882.

The mission stations have been called the ‘hidden treasures’ of southern KZN by guide and historian Steve Kotze. The cost is R40 per person.

For more information or to book, contact Sonja at 084 4006575. Specifically thinking that this outing would suit the likes of Tweni’s energetic, positive Moira King – who wakes up early on Saturday mornings to run the Umdoni park run,

Gone fishing

Ben Massey (10) enjoyed a wonderful Saturday morning fishing at Mfazazana River with dad Gavin last weekend. They landed a lovely garfish and after taking a photograph, the fish was safely released back into the ocean.
