Yalo and Mbambo were both charged with house breaking with intent to steal, and murder.

Some six years after the murder of security guard, Mondli Myula, two men were finally sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on Tuesday last week.

Mandla Yalo (32) and Power Siyabonga Mbambo (39) were handed life sentences by Regional Magistrate, Nonesi Dlamini.

Yalo and Mbambo were both charged with house breaking with intent to steal, and murder. Mbambo was also charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Detective Sergeant Zolile Sibisi from Margate Detective branch, and prosecutor Sharmilla Chinnasamy were praised for their excellent work on the drawn-out case.

In 2014, the men from Gclima were arrested by police after they shot Myula dead inside his security vehicle on November 7.

Myula had been stationed outside a bottle store after the alarm kept going off.

When Myula’s supervisor failed to reach him on his radio and cellphone, he went to investigate and found him dead inside the vehicle. His firearm was missing.

Yalo and Mbambo had attempted to break in to the bottle store, as there was an ATM inside.

Sgt Sibisi said an eye-witness linked the getaway vehicle to Nkampini Location, and Yalo handed himself in to police later that day.

His confession led to Mbambo’s arrest.

Sgt Sibisi’s excellent detective work – from cellphone records, tyre tracks, and finger prints to the recovery of the firearm – enabled her to put together a strong case.

“I am very pleased with the outcome of the case, as the victim was a father of two who put his life on the line,” she said.
