When this journalist chatted to Debra, she came across as good company. She was absolutely focused on continuing to inspire her guests with her adventures while mountain climbing. As I got to know her a bit better, I realised that Debra was all business when it came to organising things, but she liked to let loose when all was done.

Debra started Nomadic Adventures after 11 years of lecturing in sociology. She first climbed Kilimanjaro and discovered that this was “her bliss”. With a passion for the peaks, discovering new and exciting destinations, Debra has travelled extensively. Her trips include seven Kilimanjaro summits, several other treks in East Africa, as well as treks and climbs in the Himalayas and South America.

Tuesday Rostrum members listened attentively as Debra spoke of one adventure she had in the East. “I walked the distance of 73km in extreme winter conditions with a max of -46 degrees to experience the extreme conditions the local children face when travelling twice a year between boarding school and the mainland. Education means everything to them. I was fascinated by how many layers of clothes they had to put on to protect themselves,” explained Debra.

Elsie Pretorius listens attentively to Debra Bouwer.

“Yes, your nights at camp are cold, very cold! There is no way to escape it. And you may find yourself having to run out for a bush break in the dead of night. But besides all of that, we just look up. Yes, up into the incredible night sky. No city lights to block out the stars, just nature at its purest!”
