Margate Moves: There’s lots on the go

Owners of the dream machines will park at the Margate Fishing Pier this Sunday (23rd) where spectators are welcome to go and view the sleek saloons.

With Monday (24th) being Heritage Day visitors and locals are spoilt for choice this long weekend and with the Michaelmas holidays approaching, next weekend is jam-packed as well.

One of the highlights looks set to be the `Show and Shine’ event at the Margate Fishing Pier.

The Porsche Owners Club of South Africa will celebrate its 70th anniversary on the South Coast. Celebratory events include gymkhana and top end racing at Dezzi South Coast Raceway in Oslo Beach this Friday (21st) and Saturday (22nd).

The club has named the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) as its charity and in return the institute will hold a demo day at Margate beach this Sunday. The NSRI does an incredible job of protecting our coastline and the institute is well-worth supporting.

No siesta

There’s no time for siesta as the Spring Arts Fiesta kicks off at Margate beach on September 30 and continues on October 1. There’s an arts and crafts fair, sand sculpting workshop, slam poetry sessions, hip hop dancing, art exhibitions and a talent contest. Tempt those tastebuds

Riverbend Conference Centre will host the Spring Wine Festival this Saturday (22nd) from 5.30pm.

On offer will be more than 100 wines from 30 estates and this year’s fest boasts a new addition in the form of a secret gin bar featuring a variety of artisanal gins.

Tickets, at R180 per person, which includes a meal and a tasting glass, are on sale from the Riverbend shop.

Great shows

The Azalea Hall at Margate Retirement Village has two fabulous supper theatre shows coming up. First on the entertainment programme is `A Tribute to the Carpenters’ this Saturday (22nd). Produced by Evan Roberts and starring talented Durban singers Shylo Pereira and Samantha Landers the show will feature all those well loved hits by the brother and sister duo, Richard and Karen Carpenter. Pack a picnic supper and a few liquid refreshments – doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets, at R75 per person are on sale from the RAC or admin offices at the Village. The Residents’ Activities Committee is delighted to present `An Evening With Shirley Bassey’ on Saturday, October 13. The show features the dynamic Tonya Koenderman and tickets (at R75 per person) go on sale from this Tuesday (25th). All those brilliant hits sung by the Welsh coal miner’s daughter – `Diamonds Are Forever’, `Goldfinger’ and `Nobody Does It Like Me’ – will be performed.

Browse and buy

Those who love visiting flea markets will be delighted to know that there are two great fairs this weekend and both are being held in aid of community upliftment projects. Sebenza Village in Ramsgate is the venue this Saturday (22nd) and on Sunday (23rd) head off to the Hibiscus Mall parking area. The markets open from 8am. Save the date

Ramsgate residents take note – the 17th annual general meeting of the Community Police Forum has been set down for Monday, October 22.

The venue is the Lions’ Community Hall in Glenmarkie Drive and the meeting starts at 6pm.

At the special general meeting of the Ramsgate Community Police Forum held on July 30 the financial year-end was changed to coincide with that of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality which was June 30. The committee plans to present the audited financials at the AGM as well as to provide a crime report for the 12 month period ending June 30. Dog’s day

Margate and Hibiscus kennel clubs will team up to host the Club Championships Dog Show at the Port Shepstone Borough Grounds from September 28 to 30. For more info contact Sharon Derman at 073 6014622.

Beer cheer

If you can’t get to Bavaria for Oktoberfest, do not despair as Margate Country Club is holding its own beer festival. The dates to diarise for the two-day festival are October 5 and 6. Give Vivienne Karemaker at call at 039 3120571 for extra details.

Pink power

Margate Bowling Club is holding a Pink Drive Charity Day and is hoping for lots of support. The cancer awareness bowling tournament will be played next Sunday (30th), from 9am to 1pm.

There are lots of prizes on offer as well as a few raffles. And with the addition of live music and good food it looks set to be a fun day. Bowlers are asked to wear something pink even if it is only shoelaces.
