The couple, aged 42 and 49, were packing their vehicle at about 6pm when three men reportedly emerged from the bush and held them at gunpoint, demanding the keys to the vehicle.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinga confirmed the incident, saying that the men were believed to have been wearing hooded jackets.

“A silver Nissan Hardbody LDV with an ND registration, as well as fishing gear and personal belongings were stolen from the couple,” he said. “A case of carjacking is being investigated by Southport SAPS. The vehicle has not been recovered as yet.”

According to the father of one of the victims,  the men also fled with cash, cellphones and groceries.

“They demanded the car and cellphones. The money was a distraction and pacified them. It also gave my son an opportunity to keep his bank cards and driver’s licence before the criminals drove off,” he said.

The couple, who are from Westville, have a holiday cottage in Hibberdene.

Kerry Massey of Pumula Crime Watch advised people to not to put their safety at risk by staying on the beach near sunset.
