OPINION: ‘Mandela Day made memorable by kind deeds’

The Herald was inundated with requests to take photographs at the many Mandela Day events that took place up and down the coast. We tried our best but it was not always possible.

South Coasters from all walks of life did their bit to emulate former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela by giving of their time to help others.

Many charitable deeds from bathing animals at the SPCA to handing over food parcels to the needy to visiting orphanages, hospitals and retirement centres to organising outings for underprivileged children and even giving deserving families new homes were undertaken.

The Herald was inundated with requests to take photographs at the many Mandela Day events that took place up and down the coast. We tried our best but it was not always possible.

But those who did the giving will no doubt have have felt immense joy at being able to help the less fortunate.

Everyone who honoured Madiba’s legacy on Mandela Day (July 18) is saluted.

But those who used it to promote their own self interests are derided.

What we need to do is make many more days Mandela ones.
