Teen drowns in Margate lagoon
Three children were swimming in the lagoon when one of them got into difficulty.
A TEENAGE girl (14) drowned at Margate main beach last Saturday afternoon. Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said three children were swimming in the lagoon when one of them got into difficulty. “The other two children tried to help the girl but had to abandon their rescue attempts.”
Lt-Col Wiid added the children then ran to the lifeguards on duty at the main beach and took them to the lagoon. However, the lifeguards could not find the girl. Lt-Col Wiid pointed out that the lagoon was a no-swimming area.”
Port Shepstone Search and Rescue unit Warrant Officers Marc Wiid and Gawie Nel and Sergeant Rommel da Rosa with search and rescue dog, Kim, responded and began searching for the teen. The girl’s body was found by Sgt da Rosa at 7.12pm. An inquest docket has been opened, and the case is being investigated by Margate detectives.
If it was a ‘no-swimming’ area why were the girls not told? From what I’m reading, the girls tried to rescue but failed and ran 2 get help from the life-guards. That’s a very long period for the girls to swim,drown, try to save and still run for help without any lifeguard seeing!!
Shame condolences to the family. I am confused, please can the lifeguards answer, If the lagoon is a no swimming area why do they sit in their tower daily watching children swim there? And seriously parents do you know what is floating in that lagoon. Raw sewerage
Terrible. Particularly as the “No Swimming” had been lying discarded on the ground nearby for weeks. This is gross negligence and neglect by the authorities, who are culpable.
