Police conduct surprise search at Amandawe high school

Warrant Officer Brian Khumalo of the Umzinto K9 Unit, accompanied by his narcotics dog, Nani, searched the classrooms as well as the pupils' schoolbags for any sign of drugs.

HIGH school pupils at Zithokozise were paid a surprise visit by members of the Scottburgh Saps Social Crime Prevention Unit on Thursday last week, when members conducted a crime awareness campaign.

Pupils at the Amandawe-based school were addressed by Sergeant Christopher Mahlawe who warned them that the use of drugs has consequences, as does engaging in criminal activities.

“Booklets on drugs were distributed to the pupils,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Moments later, acting Vispol commander, Captain Vijay Moodley, accompanied by members of the Umzinto K9 Unit returned to the school alongside Sergeants Mahlawe and Joel Singo.

Classroom to classroom searches were conducted, the aim of which was to root out drugs and dangerous weapons.

“Many of the pupils were in possession of cellphones and they were warned that it was against school policy to carry cellphones to school,” Captain Pandarum said.

Warrant Officer, Brian Khumalo of the Umzinto K9 Unit, accompanied by his narcotics dog, Nani, searched the classrooms as well as the pupils’ schoolbags for any sign of drugs.

Police later physically searched through the schoolbags but fortunately, no drugs or weapons were found.
