Mehlomnyama man found guilty of hacking aunt to death and dismembering her body

The court heard how a neighbour had found Mhlongo's remains; her legs, breasts and one arm were missing from the disembowelled torso.

Sukoluhle Ngqulunga (21) was this week found guilty of murdering his aunt, Ntombilezi Mhlongo (57) in Mehlomnyama in 2015, as well as on a charge of housebreaking with intent to murder.

Ngqulunga, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, appeared in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on Tuesday this week.

Senior Magistrate Johann Bester ordered that he be sent to Fort Napier Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

The court heard how a neighbour had found Mhlongo’s remains; her legs, breasts and one arm were missing from the disembowelled torso.

“The dismembering of Mhlongo indicates a purposeful act. This was no uncontrolled, wild lashing out at someone with a knife, it was a methodical dismembering of limbs and parts of the body. His efforts to conceal and bury the body parts near his home, his veiled threats to his sister to disregard what she might be witnessing and his flight from the police when they arrived to his home, indicate that he was able to distinguish between right and wrong,” said Magistrate Bester.

“It is clear from his conduct on the Sunday morning that he was quite aware of what he was doing when disposing of what would have been human flesh. Yet he pretended that he was still so intoxicated that he was unaware of his actions.”

Magistrate Bester added that the court had found Ngqulunga had intentionally broken into Mhlongo’s home with the intention of committing murder.

“This was a gruesomely deliberate and calculated killing,” he said.
