The lagoon has been closed since last week as a precautionary measure, as there is suspected contamination. The beach is closed due to the river mouth being open and the lagoon flowing into the beach – France Zama, Ugu spokesman.
Mr Zama said the municipality’s Environmental Health and Environmental Management Services had taken samples for testing which will reveal the cause of the contamination.
They are still awaiting the results and more sampling will be done today (Tuesday).

The public is urged to avoid contact with the lagoon as it has not been yet certified safe for any activities.

Mr Zama said signage has been placed along the lagoon prohibiting the use of the water for swimming, fishing, and the collection and consumption of all sea creatures until further notice.
