Umzumbe man (83) requires surgery after being injured in bicycle hijacking

The victim's wife warns cyclists to be on the lookout for thieves.

AN Umzumbe woman, whose elderly husband was seriously injured when his bicycle was stolen, has warned cyclists to be aware of aggressive bicycle thieves possibly operating in this area.

According to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, the bicycle theft victim, an 83-year-old man, was cycling on the D98, a quiet road in the Umzumbe area, on Saturday, July 8, at around 5pm when the attack took place.

He was approached by three men who pushed him off his bike, after which he lost consciousness. They then stole his bicycle and left him lying injured on the side of the road. A robbery case has been opened at Southport SAPS.

The victim’s wife, who did not wish to be named, said her husband had been monitored for concussion after the attack and had needed to undergo extensive surgery to repair a painful shoulder injury sustained during the bicycle hijacking.

She advised cyclists to take care on the roads and to avoid quiet back roads when there were few people around.
