KZN quarterly crime stats remain grim for violent crimes; burglaries in Margate increase

Stock theft remains high in the province.

THE quarterly crime statistics were released to the Portfolio Committee in Parliament recently.

These statistics reflect on the period April 1 to December 31, 2016 and are compared with the same period in 2015.

Durban central topped the 10 worst precincts in the country in burglary at non-residential premises with 650 cases reported.

Margate also showed an increase in burglaries.

The statistics showed a marginal decline in crime of 1.6 percent nationally, with murder decreasing by 0.1 percent and attempted murder going down by 0.8 percent.

Contact crimes decreased by 1.9 percent and sexual offences by 6.35 percent.

In KwaZulu-Natal the stats remained grim for violent crimes.

These include 25.3 percent increase in carjackings, 6.3 percent increase for robbery with aggravating circumstances and a 1.5 percent increase in murder.

There was a decrease in sexual assault of 15.6 percent. Stock theft remains high in KZN.

Police minister Nkosinathi Nhleko welcomed the decrease in contact crimes.

He also noted that new strategies are needed in the fight against crime.
