They are are seriously concerned that the dilapidated water pipes, which are more than 45 years old, are constantly bursting in various sections and are being poorly ‘repaired’, albeit temporarily, to restore water supply.

Fencing was damaged and trees uprooted by Ugu staff on this section of Indira Road.

This situation has been occurring for the past two or three years, but recently the problem has become a constant, resulting in loss of precious water and costly patchwork road maintenance, which residents say can only be described as ‘poor and sloppy’.

The road tar, pavements and fences on properties along Indira Road are dug up to conduct repairs and maintenance on broken pipes, but are often badly restored.

According to the residents, when repairs are being done, the area is left in an unacceptable state, with broken pavements, fences and pipes left behind on mounds of sand and cut vegetation left in untidy heaps.

However, this has also created another problem when it rains. With pavements broken down and not properly set, water flows  into properties.

Indira Road has not been restored to its original state, say residents.

The residents urgently request that the situation be given serious consideration by  Ugu District Municipality. “We demand that the old and dilapidated water pipes along the road be replaced with a newer pipeline to avoid constant bursts,” said one resident.

He also insisted that the road tar, pavements and fences, which are being broken down as a result of the municipality’s repairs to the pipes, be properly repaired.

“Pavements need to be properly restored and new pavements constructed so as to prevent flooding of properties when it rains or when pipes burst. We are prepared to meet with officials to discuss our concerns so that resolutions can be found,” he said.

Spokesman for Ugu District Municipality, France Zama, said the municipality is currently in the process of conducting a budget adjustment so that funds will be made available to address the predicament of aged pipelines in most part of the district.

Pavements were damaged by Ugu plumbers when fixing the pipeline recently.

“It is indeed in the plans of the municipality to ensure that all aged infrastructure is replaced to stop the recurring pipe bursts,” he said.

He added that after repairs, the municipality deployed a road reinstatement team that ‘conducted infill and repair to damaged roads’.

“A team will be sent out as soon as possible to address this complaint.” he said.
