Transporting people on the back of bakkies is illegal.

A CRASH claimed the life of a young pupil, another is fighting for his life and 14 others are recovering in local hospitals.

The pupils, mostly from KwaNzimakwe, were en route to school when the bakkie in which they were being transported was involved in a collision on the toll road near St Michael’s last Thursday morning.

The school year started on a tragic note when five pupils were killed on the first day of school in the Ntuzuma area and almost every day there are reports of pupils being injured on the way to school.

Transporting children in bakkies is illegal, but there are very few school buses on the South Coast.

Parents are urged to utilise safe scholar transport and the Education Department needs to take a serious look at providing a bus service in the Ugu District.
