UPDATE: School children injured in crash near St Mike’s ‘critical’

Pupils suffered serious head injuries, deep bruising and and broken limbs.

DOCTORS are still trying to stabilise pupils involved in the horrific accident this morning.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital Casualty unit received nine young victims who were involved in the crash.

The clinical personnel worked to stabilise the patients, but despite their efforts, a six-year-old girl died due to the serious head injuries she suffered.

PRO for Port Shepstone Hospital, Phumza Morai said doctors are still working on the children.

“The pupils are critical as they sustained head injuries coupled with deep bruises and broken limbs. The hospital will endeavor to render the necessary care to the patients,” she said.

A TOTAL of 16 people, many children being transported to school, were injured when a bakkie and another vehicle collided on the R16 highway near St Mike’s.

The bakkie was heading north, taking children to various schools in Port Shepstone. It has been confirmed that some of the children attend Port Shepstone Primary.

The road has been closed while rescue workers tend to the scene.

Medics have already taken the injured people to hospital for further care.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident. It’s uncertain what caused it at this stage.
