Blue Flags fly high
Sadly the region's premier holiday destination, Margate, lost its Blue Flag a few years back.
NINE KwaZulu-Natal beaches, seven of which are on the South Coast, have been awarded Blue Flag status.
Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom launched the national 2016/17 programme at Marina Beach last Friday.
The local beaches are Marina Beach, Trafalgar, Ramsgate, Lucien, Southport, Umzumbe and Hibberdene.
Sadly the region’s premier holiday destination, Margate, lost its Blue Flag a few years back.
The international programme has been running since 1987 and there are 33 different criteria such as water quality, safety and services, environment education and environmental management, which need to be met.
Having Blue Flag status is a wonderful marketing tool and the municipalities and the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) which manages our beaches are to be congratulated.
Now we need to keep our number one attractions in pristine condition.
