Disabled given a treat day

Games, arts and crafts, pamper sessions and delicious snacks made for an enjoyable time.

A SPECIAL fun day was held for those living with disabilities by Pro Deo Care Group at the Lions’ Community Centre in Glenmarkie Road in Ramsgate last Thursday.

The group, aligned with the Dutch Reformed Church in Margate, works with the elderly and disabled. ‘Pro Deo’ means ‘For God’ and comprises a non-denominational group of men and women from the community who perform various services out of love.

The open day was held to treat the disabled to a dance performance by the pupils of St Martin de Porres, followed by games, arts and crafts, knitting, pedicures and manicures.

Eloise van Niekerk, chairman of Pro Deo, said the day was to get to know people with disabilities and their carers in our community. “For us, we not only want to reach out but to specifically understand and start caring (for the disabled),” she said.

Dr Nic Grobler, renowned for his exquisite bronze sculptures, saluted all the carers of disabled people. “Each one of you is unique with a wonderful purpose God has for your life,” he said. He spoke of the inspirational message behind each of his symbolic sculptures.

The elderly are welcome to attend Pro Deo’s care clinics on the first Thursday of every month at the Port Edward library and Dutch Reformed Church in Margate. The organisation is also involved in the weekly cancer clinic at Port Shepstone.
