Peggy Nkonyeni resigns from PEC

The former South Coaster was named as an additional committee member just a week ago.

WITHIN just one week of being appointed as a member of the ANC KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial executive committee, MEC for Education Peggy Nkonyeni has called it quits.

There were reports that it was out of ‘bitterness’ over the new leadership in the ANC in the province, but she said she preferred to focus more on her provincial ministerial duties.

Ms Nkonyeni – formerly from the South Coast – was named as an additional committee member a week ago.

However, she failed to attend a single meeting and has now asked to be released from the ANC executive.

ANC Provincial Secretary Super Zuma said the provincial working committee had received, considered and unconditionally accepted Ms Nkonyeni’s resignation from the PEC.

The Mercury reported that provincial spokesman Mdumiseni Ntuli said during the last provincial conference that Ms Nkonyeni had contested a slate that was opposed to the current leadership. She was, therefore, part of ‘the losing camp’.

Mr Ntuli is reported to have said Ms Nkonyeni’s resignation from the PEC was ‘out of bitterness’ and ‘far from being genuine’.

“She has not accepted that there is a new leadership and not prepared to be given whatever responsibility,” he said.

Mr Ntuli says he was not sure whether Ms Nkonyeni would be considered for future deployments or not.

“At the moment, we don’t know what she can do other than being an MEC.”
