Voting: What you need to know ahead of the municipal elections

Make sure you are registered to vote.

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed the local government elections will take place between May and August. Voter registration starts on March 5 and 6.

For those who don’t know, municipal elections are held every five years to elect councillors who will be responsible for governing a municipality for that period, making sure that services that are important to their communities are rendered. The current term of office ends on May 18.

South Africans who are abroad or those outside their districts during the elections will not be eligible to vote. However, special votes were open to everyone. University students would be allowed to vote in their home districts or within the municipal wards where they were staying.

IEC Port Shepstone Senior Outreach and Training Officer Sihle Mbatha urged everyone to register at their nearest IEC offices.

“In the upcoming registration weekend, people from rural areas will be required to fill out two forms instead of one, in order to ensure that their physical addresses are clear. All stations will be opened from 8.am to 5pm on both days.”

To register, you need to take along your identity document (green book), Smart ID card or temporary identity certificate.

To check if your name is on the voters’ roll, sms your ID number to 32810.

For more information, contact info@elections.org.za or visit the IEC website for a list of local offices.

The Port Shepstone office, situated at 22 Price Street, can be contacted at 039 684 2974.
