Dagga grower arrested

He had cultivated the plants in between his mealie crop in an attempt to conceal them.

A MAN (59) from Mehlomnyama, near St Faiths couldn’t disguise his stash of dagga trees from four Mehlomnyama police officers last Friday.

Alson Protas Mchunu appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week on a charge of cultivating dagga.

Last Friday afternoon, Captain Emmanuel Ndlovu, Warrant Officers Charles Khawula and Goodway Mqadi and Constable Blessed Bhengu of the Mehlomnyama SAPS found dagga trees growing in between Mchunu’s mealie crop at his residence in Tin-Town, Mkhomazana Ward.

He was arrested and 333 dagga trees were uprooted and confiscated by police.

“He had cultivated the dagga in between the mealies in an attempt to conceal them,” said police spokesman, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The case was postponed for further investigation.
