Businesses warned to be alert

She said they would be fined R5 000.

LOCAL businesses are warned not to fall for the ‘conditions of employment’ and ‘safety act’ scam. Pietermaritzburg and Durban businesses have already been scammed, according to East Coast Radio .

Businesses have been approached by certain individuals claiming to be from the Department of Labour. The scam has now spread to Port Shepstone as well.

“This woman (in the picture) came into our business and claimed we were displaying expired acts and would get a fine of R5000. She said we had to pay the fine, or we could buy the new act from her at a reduced rate of R800. Cash only,” said a local businessman.

It has been alleged that she had an ID card and documents with the Department of Labour’s letterhead.

“Luckily we were able to catch her on our security camera,” said the business owner.
