Showdown at Umkomaas inn

Heavily outnumbered, the security officer was unable to stop them from speeding off.

PATRONS at the Orissa Inn in Umkomaas had the shock of their lives on Friday night when five other ‘customers’ suddenly drew guns and held them up.

Reminiscent of an old Wild West movie, two men vaulted the bar counter while the barman had turned to pour them drinks.

They helped themselves to the cash in the till as well as liquor while another two relieved about six patrons of their cash and cellphones. A fifth stood guard at the door.

They were making their getaway when Magma security officer Conrad Cele blocked their way. There was an exchange of gunfire and Cele was lucky to escape with his life. His car was hit five times.

Heavily outnumbered, he was unable to stop them from speeding off.

The case is being investigated by Detective Constable Knowledge Siyabonga Cele of the Umkomaas SAPS Detective Service.

Anyone who can help should contact him at 039 9736100 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
