Seeking the young farmer of the year

KZN agricultural union Kwanalu is searching for KZN’s ‘Young Farmer of the Year’.

KWAZULU-NATAL’S Agricultural Union, Kwanalu, is calling on young farmers in the province to enter the 2015 Toyota SA/Agri SA National Young Farmer of the Year competition, in the hope that KZN brings home the title.

This year’s winner will drive away in a Toyota Hilux single cab, and there are a host of other exciting prizes to be won.

This year’s competition will be held in Pretoria during October and young farmers of both genders, whether owners or partners in a farm, who are full members of their province’s agricultural union and are under the age of 35, are eligible to enter.

Judging and evaluation of the farmers and their agricultural practices takes place at provincial level, with applicants being evaluated on all aspects of their business, including overall vision for the future of the farm or business, as well as staff and BEE practices.

Judges will visit farmers on their farms during the selection process and will look at all facets of the farmers’ business from financing, budgets and investment policy, technical aspects of livestock breeding systems, disease control, pasture systems and plans, fertilisation, weed control and cultivation practices of crops and orchards.

Although the size of the farmer’s enterprise is taken into account, judging is based on excellence with regards to how the young farmer executes his day-to-day business practices – no matter how big or small the farm.
