ANC regional squabbles still tear up the party

They have evidence that delegates' credentials were manipulated

IT is unclear whether the Secretary General of the ANC Gwede Mantashe will address the squabble within the party in the Lower South Coast region.

Last week, aggrieved members of the group called ‘Forces of Change’ went to Durban City Hall where ANC top leadership was due to meet the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) about problems facing the eThekwini region.

According to one daily newspaper, Mbongeni Ngcungama was quoted as saying they are not going to campaign for the party leading up to local government elections next year and opposition parties will emerge.

Tom Madlala, ‘Forces of Change’ leader, said the only reason for going to Durban was not to ‘distract the meeting’. Their intention was to remind Mr Mantashe that they are still awaiting responses, as they raised complaints with the ANC National Executive Committee on March 25.

“We have evidence that Mzwandile Mkhwanazi, ANC Lower South Coast secretary, was appointed after delegates’ credentials were manipulated. We also have video footage of everything that was happening at Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre during the conference in November last year and now we want Mantashe to intervene,” said Mr Madlala.

ANC Spokesman, Sipho Dlamalala, said the province’s task team investigated the complaints and found they were not valid.

“During a youth league cadre forum at Uvongo Town Hall, the comrades stormed the meeting, chanting slogans and insulting the regional secretary. Even when the province held a meeting with the branches, these people insulted the chairman, Tolomane Myayiza,” said Mr Dlamalala.

“Their behaviour makes us believe that they are now enemies, not members, of the ANC,” Mr Dlamalala added.
