Chaos erupts in Harding over service delivery

The community has taken to the streets to voice their frustration with the municipality.

THE town of Harding came to a standstill today over a service delivery protest.

The situation is escalating with dustbins and tyres being set  alight and used to block roads. Shops have closed their doors as hundreds of people carrying sticks and placards marched  through the town.

It’s believed that police from outside areas have been called in to monitor the situation.

There are also reports of stone throwing which has left shop windows broken.

A large container of rubbish has been tipped over and  the rubbish has been strewn on the corner of Wilkinson and Richardson Roads.

Last month grievances were brought to the attention of  Umuziwabantu Municipality, and the municipality was warned that if these grievances were not addressed, Harding would be ‘closed down’.

Mayor  Dixie Nciki said that a response to the memorandum had been prepared, but due to the public holiday, there was a delay in issuing the response.

One of those behind the strike told the South Coast Herald that some of the issues raised included  a lack of employment, potholes, crime – most recently  the robbery at a wholesaler in the town which left two policemen  and a security guard dead and another police officer injured.

Another concern was that money allocated for projects don’t materialise.

He said that they would protest until Mayor Nciki addressed them and gave them a response.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS.
