Sun to shine on Scottburgh at last

R500 000 is to be spent on upgrades to the beach over the next three months.

THE Blue Marlin’s R35-million upgrade seems to have jolted the powers-that-be into action at last.

Scottburgh beachfront’s promised facelift is now imminent after consultations between the mayor, municipal manager, role players from local business and ratepayers’ associations.

The facelift will be in accordance with a list of ‘short term fix’ items drawn up by the role players.

Umdoni Municipality has also re-advertised for tenders for a pub and a restaurant at the Beachfront Pavilion which was to be a bone of contention for years.

Business representatives also wrote to Minister Pravin Gordhan and suggested that under his ‘Back to Basics’ scheme, Umdoni councillors and municipal management could join hands with local people and work together to improve our beach and CBD.

Mayor Siyabonga Khwela and Municipal Manager, Xolani Luthuli, have embraced this idea and have stated that they realise that Scottburgh as a tourist destination is the key to Umdoni region becoming more prosperous for everyone.

Mr Luthuli has earmarked R500 000 to  be spent within the next three months on upgrades to the beach. These funds will be prioritised by the steering committee made up of Umdoni management and local business and ratepayer representatives. Mr Luthuli is also proposing a further R2.4-million for the Scottburgh CBD in the next budget.

In response to the letter to Minister Gordhan, Dr Kevin Naidoo from his offices came down on April 16 and met with business people, ratepayer representatives, Mr Luthuli and Sivuyile Mbewu from Ugu. He was extremely impressed with the cooperation between all concerned. Dr Naidoo has agreed to try and support this local initiative as much as possible.
