VANDALS caused wholesale destruction when they broke into Umbango and Umzimkhulu sewer pump stations last week and removed copper cables, electrical panels and electric motors.
Spokesman France Zama said Ugu District Municipality could hardly believe the level of vandalism and the looting that had taken place. Both the municipal pump stations were in totally dysfunctional states.
The damage to the pump stations has resulted in sewerage spillages into both the Umbango and Umzimkhulu Rivers. Ugu has dispatched technicians to assess the condition of the pump stations and the levels of contamination the spillages have caused. Vacuum Tanker Services is helping out with the removal of effluent at the pump stations to prevent further pollution.
Mr Zama asked residents of the areas surrounding the spills to bear with Ugu officials while they did their best to mitigate the contamination. He also warned residents against using the affected rivers until an assessment could be done and the problem, solved.
