‘How do residents access the road?’

South Coasters, leave your prejudices in your pockets when you pick up your car keys.

DEAR Editor,-

On passing the ‘white bicycle’ memorial on the corner of Stott Street, I regularly pray for an easing of pain for the late Burry Stander’s loved ones. With utmost respect to our cyclist hero, circumstances have forced me to raise the following points.

Ever since the South Coast Herald’s articles regarding the ‘Burry Stander intersection or crossover’, I have encountered numerous incidents of disgruntled motorists hooting frantically, rolling down windows, cussing, pointing fingers and gesturing vehemently whenever I need to turn right into Stott Street.

I live behind Astor Road, so this is how I and many others gain access to our homes. There are numerous dwellings built alongside our narrow South Coast Roads, so the question is, how are residents meant to access their homes if there is no turning allowed on either side of the road?

I have made a point of noting that, when other motorists turn right, there are no objections. Why then am I being victimised? Is it because of my race? Colour? Attire? Religion? Gender? Is it racism, or merely people venting out of ignorance?

South Coasters, leave your prejudices in your pockets when you pick up your car keys. On the roads, we are all merely motorists. To all my fellow traffic-officer-cum-motorists out there, please visit www.trafficsigns.co.za/rules-of-the-road.php and take note of the section pertaining to ‘except at a crossover.’ Exercise tolerance.
