Street child allegedly whipped by police
Police say no one was assaulted at the station.
POLICE confirmed that several juveniles were brought to the Port Shepstone police station recently after complaints that they had been harassing people at the Oribi Plaza intersection.
This report came after a South Coaster posted on a social networking site that a one of the boys, known as ‘Michael’ who regularly begs at that intersection, had been arrested.
The writer said they were at the police station when they saw the police bring boy in.
“Then all everyone could hear for a few seconds was the sound of a whip and the screaming that followed thereafter,” they wrote.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid pointed out hat it is very dangerous for these young people to move around among the heavy traffic at traffic light intersection.
She added that no one had been assaulted at the police station and suggested that the writer contact the Department of Social Welfare, which deals with homeless children.
