A MANHUNT in the rural areas of Hibberdene ended in a robber being shot this morning after police tracked down two men thought to have robbed a family at their Pennington home.

According to police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, a couple (in their 20s) was asleep in their house when they awoke to find four men in their bedroom.

“The men threatened them with a knife and the man was stabbed in the arm. The intruders then tied up the husband, wife and their child and ransacked the house,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

The robbers fled with laptops, jewellery, clothing, watches, cellphones and various other items. The couple managed to summon help and reported the matter to the police.

A massive search began and police from Scottburgh followed up with investigations, which led them to Hibberdene.

“A detective from Hibberdene stopped next to the road amongst sugar cane fields when he saw two men walking, carrying bags. As he was about to approach them, one of the men produced a knife and attempted to attack the detective,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

The detective, fearing for his life, fired warning shots. One of the men was wounded and the other fled. The wounded man was arrested.

A search for the fleeing man ensued. Police were assisted by Hibiscus Coast Law Enforcement as well as officers from Gladiator Security. However they could not find the man.

Some stolen property, taken during the robbery, was found in bags the robbers had dropped.

It is believed that the robbers, from Chabane, near Hibberdene are part of a gang.
