Sheppie golfers win league – again

Matches were played in great spirit by the golfers.

PORT Shepstone Country Club won the Southern KZN Handicap League for 2014 by beating Southbroom last Sunday.

In doing so, they successfully defended the title, but had to do it without their ‘kaptein’ Johann van Niekerk, who was away at his son Ryno’s ‘bull’s party’.

Still, with home course advantage, there was no stopping them.

Stand-in captain Daan Swanepoel said the final game had been played in an excellent spirit.

“I spoke to my players and they said it was great, from the organisation on the day, to the friendly ‘chirping’ on the course,” he said.

Southern KZN president Colin Iddon reiterated this, saying that camaraderie was vital in the game of golf.

Next year, the foursomes will be scrapped in the Handicap League and replaced with betterball in the morning, followed by the singles.

The union’s annual general meeting was held afterwards, and may have been the quickest on record, perhaps because the braai fires were going nicely.Colin was voted in unopposed again as the president.

He mentioned that the league teams had done quite well, although they hadn’t won their respective leagues this year.

He hoped that more youngsters would come through and ultimately show their skills at this level.
