Chaos and drama at ANC conference

The injured bodyguard had to be taken to hospital.

THERE was chaos at the African National Congress Lower South Coast region’s conference at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last weekend.

ANC spokesman Sipho Dlamalala confirmed that there were protests outside the conference venue as some people wanted a change of leadership.

It is alleged that one of the security guards was roughed up by an angry crowd while trying to deal with rival factions.

People who were at the conference claim that the guard was giving special treatment to groups who were in favour of the regional secretary, Mzwandile Mkhwanazi, and wouldn’t let those who wanted change to enter the venue.

“He didn’t ask the other group for tags. They were just let through, but when the group wanting change approached the entrance, he stopped them demanding tags,” said one member.

It was said when people started to force their way in through the entrance, the guard drew his gun and threatened to shoot.

“I heard about the incident where the crowd assaulted the bodyguard,” said Mr Dlamalala, adding that besides that incident, which happened outside the venu, all went well with the conference. “The party is pleased with the outcome of the event,” he explained.

Tolomane Mnyayiza was elected as the chairman and Mondli Chiliza his deputy. Mzwanidle Mkwanazi retained his position as the regional secretary with Phumlile Mthiyane as his deputy. Ntombifikile Gumede was elected treasurer.

“We are happy with the outcome of the conference, the party is now to move on and concentrate on 2016 local government elections,” he said.
