Man jumps off Margate pier

Police found an identity document in the clothing that the man had left behind on the pier.

MARGATE police, together with SAPS search and rescue and police divers, searched frantically for a man (25) who fell off the Margate pier yesterday (Wednesday).

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said police were told that a man was standing on the edge of the pier and wanted to jump in the water.

“At around 11am, before a police negotiator arrived, the man had jumped into the sea. Police tried to spot him in the rough sea but there was no sign of him,” she said.

Police found an identity document in the clothing he had left behind on the pier.

“A missing person report will be compiled ,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
