Day 2: One dead, nine arrested in N2 protest

The ongoing service delivery protest has notched up its first fatality.

THE protests on the N2 at Murchison have claimed a life. Police spokesman Lt-Col Wiid said a man (26) had died at the scene. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The road has been blocked with burning tyres and rocks since yesterday morning and remains closed to traffic. Motorists are advised to take an alternative route.

Police arrested and charged one person (32) for public violence yesterday and Lt-Col Wiid said a further eight people were arrested this morning. They are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Police vehicles were stoned yesterday. “The side window of the police vehicle was smashed,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Police from Tactical Response Team, Public Order Policing, Visible Policing, Road Traffic Inspectorate and Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s Law Enforcement are currently at the scene.

Ugu District Municipality spokesman, Sipho Khuzwayo confirmed that the municipality would release an official press statement today.

“Water has been restored to most parts of Murchison,” he added.

  1. You voted ANC now live with it why disrupt our lives. Nobody put a gun to your head and said vote for Apathy Nepotism Corruption

  2. You vited ANC now suffer the consequences. Its ironic you are so afraid of DA who actually wanna help you.

  3. this has entirely nothing to do with which political party we voted for, its all about the roads being fixed so the pipes got disrupted and obviously something had to be done for them to be heard and provided with service delivery.you cant tell me that this would have been avoided if the DA or ant other political party was ruling for that matter. im not saying im for the ANC but be content nd relevant when you comment about such things. condolences to the Phiri family
