New mayor for Ugu

After serving 18 months as the mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), Sikhumbuzo 'Zero' Mqadi resigned on Tuesday last week.

After serving 18 months as the mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), Sikhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi resigned on Tuesday last week.
In May, it was reported and confirmed by the ANC that Mqadi will join Ugu District Municipality, as the new mayor.
In his resignation letter he said that he had resigned as RNM councillor, mayor and Ugu representative.

“I wish to express my appreciation for the support I have received from RNM councillors, municipal manager, head of departments, managers and the staff. I enjoyed every moment of work we did together to enhance service delivery. I have truly enjoyed my tenure with the municipality and I am extremely grateful for the encouragement you have given me as the mayor. I wish you all the best, and never stop working for the RNM citizens.”

Mqadi will take over the post of the late Ugu mayor, Phumlile Mthiyane.

Since Mthiyane’s death earlier this year, Ugu has been led by the acting mayor, Mandla Chiya.

The ANC has also written to RNM’s chief whip, Teddy Hlophe informing him that they are deploying the speaker, Zodwa Mzindle as Ugu representative.
According to a letter from regional secretary of the ANC, Xolani Luthuli, the post will be temporary until a new mayor is appointed at RNM.

In March this year, the ANC region sent three names to the province for the mayor’s post at Ugu.
It is believed that one of the names was that of Ravi Pillay, the former MEC for KwaZulu-Natal Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

However, at the time Luthuli was unable to comment as it would have compromised the process.
When Pillay was contacted for comment, he said that it was not for the public to know, but it was the processes of the ANC.
Pillay wished Mqadi well and said he hopes that with all the challenges faced by Ugu, he will be able to work with all the stakeholders.

“I am also glad that they are finished with the process, meaning, now we will have a mayor.”
