Kindly pensioner assaulted, robbed at home

It seems no good deed goes unpunished.

AN elderly woman was assaulted and robbed at her home in Uvongo on Wednesday last week.

What started out as a pleasant morning for the 81-year-old woman turned into a nightmare.

The pensioner began her day at 8am by taking her dog for a walk on St Michael’s beach.

She had parked her car in the parking lot on the Shelly Beach side. When she returned she saw two men washing her car.

According to police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka, the woman confronted the men, asking why they were washing her car.

“The men demanded money  but, according to her, she had no cash on her at the time. She then took the men to her flat where she gave them R100. She also gave them four slices of bread with jam,” said Capt Mfeka.

The next evening the same two men returned to her flat.

At about 6pm, she was preparing supper when one of the men confronted her.

“According to police reports the woman told the man to ‘get out’. She then noticed the second man in the house. One of the robbers covered her mouth with his hand and held her by the throat while the other searched the house,” said Captain Mfeka.

Her calls for help alerted her neighbour (36) who came to her assistance immediately. When he shouted, the men fled, running past him.

It is believed that the neighbour grabbed one of the intruders by the jacket but the man managed to get away. The intruders escaped by jumping over the gate and a wall.

The elderly woman suffered injuries to her face.

The robbers are thought to be between 18 and 25 years old. At the time of the robbery both men were wearing blue overalls.

“People, especially the elderly, needed to be vigilant at all times,” said Captain Mfeka.
