Road closed at R102 near Umkomaas

After Monday's heavy rain, there are now cracks in the road and more ground has washed away.

Motorists are asked to avoid the R102 between Umkomaas and Ilfracombe when travelling as it has been closed by the Department of Transport since yesterday (May 8).

This comes after a section of the R102 near Umkomaas beach was severely damaged during the April floods last year. Work has since commenced on this section of road, but after Monday’s heavy rain, there are now cracks in the road and more ground has washed away onto the road below leading to the Umkomaas river mouth.

Workers at the site stated that this section of road can be dangerous for motorists and pedestrians who are unaware of the damaged section, and people are urged to use the detour.

Signage has been put up indicating the road closure and sand and rocks have been put across the road to prevent anyone from going through.
