Matchplay champs soon at Southbroom
Some regard matchplay as the purest form of the game.
The annual men’s matchplay champs at Southbroom Golf Club will take place on April 1-2.
It’s unlikely anyone can stop Gavin Sole winning his twelfth in a row, but some of the young pretenders may fancy their chances – of winning one hole, that is.
The B division is often where the real fun takes place, with some wily old hands able to produce some gritty matchplay golf.
Draws are as follows.
A division: Gavin Sole (1) vs Grant Richards (8), Cyprian Xolo (4) vs Cameron Olivant (5), David Rush (3) vs Malcolm Greenland (6), Graham Sole (2) vs Gary Purtell (7).
B division: Stefan le Roux (1) vs Howard Kelly (8), Bruce Begley (4) vs Werner Duggan (5), Simon Shusha (3) vs Norman Jeffery (6), Det Wichmann (2) vs Neill Crossey (7).
The Nashua Business Day at Southbroom Golf Club last Friday was won on 93 points by Craig Jolliffe, Paul de Lange, Dean Goldhill and AB Sidumo. Format was two to count on par fours and fives, with three to count on par threes.
Saturday’s competition was an alliance, with two to count, won by Chris and Alexander Huber, Hans and Gjertrud Kok, on 83 points.
In second place on 81 points were Keith Bailey, Gary Lig, Tilly Nel and Pierre van de Walle, counting out John Fox, Norman Farrell, Roger Hissey and Bruce Begley.
The ladies Combined Stableford Alliance last Wednesday was won by Heleen Hissey and Louise Leal, Shelley Myers and Irene Schanda, on 78 points.
Runners-up on 76 points were Heather Anderson, Gwyn Wright, Michelle van der Hoek and Sue Kupisiewicz.
The men’s Combined Stableford Alliance was won on 80 points by Roger Hissey, Roy Deakins, Malcolm Moorley and Keith Bailey.
Runners-up on 79 points were Gary Purtell, Nicky Smith, Phil Verwey and Martin Hutton. In third spot were Peter Kupisiewicz, Brian Blackstock, Bruce and Derrik Matthew on 76 points.
