Grants beneficiaries urged to renew Sassa cards

Only grant recipients with cards expiring in March are called to renew their cards.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and the South African Post Office recently issued a statement calling on grants recipients with Postbank or Sassa gold cards expiring in March, to collect their new cards at their nearest post office.

Recipients whose cards are not expiring in March are discouraged from going to the post office, as they will not be given new cards.
Sassa and Postbank will make an announcement on the dates and processes for the collection of cards that expire in later months. Grants recipients whose cards expire later should not be concerned as they will continue to receive their social grant monies as their cards remain valid.

The issuing of the new cards started on Monday, March 13 and will continue throughout the month.
On Mondays and Tuesdays new cards will be issued to old age and disability grants recipients. Wednesdays to Saturdays will be for child support and all other grants.

Both entities urge recipients of social grants to bring along their SA Identity documents or cards.
The post office staff will assist grants recipients to activate the new cards and select a new PIN. The cards will be active immediately, to make withdrawals or for other transactions.

The new cards will only be issued to the person in whose name the expiring card has been issued. No person will be able to collect a card on behalf of another, unless they are registered with Sassa as a procurator.

The post office operating hours are from Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00.
Recipients that have lost their cards expiring in March 2023 must also go to a nearby post office to collect their new card. Finger verification will be used to issue a new card.
