On a roll with Symmo and Southbroom

B20 Cricket-bowls is simple, ingenious and very popular.

Southbroom Bowling Club (SBC) and Pat Symcox of Re/Max Coast and Country estate agency have teamed up to present the inaugural B20 Cricket-Bowls league.

Starting on Thursday, February 23, 12 teams of three will compete for prizemoney totaling R9 000. Each team will have a local ‘celebrity’ skip, local bowlers and a brand-new bowler put forward by each sponsor.

“The new player can be anybody from the sponsor’s company,” said SBC’s president Cleve Walker.
“This means that Pat will have to play as a celebrity skip in the Re/Max Coast and Country team. Pat is already a fine bowler, although his cricketing spin is less evident than the lawn-bowls variety these days.”

Re/Max Coast and Country has always been a sponsor of lawn bowls and is now taking it up to a new level.

“We sponsored the Doug Watson Memorial tournament at Margate last year and now we are supporting the launch of the B20 Cricket-bowls in our region. It is a great way to introduce new players into the sport. Bowls has always been close to me and my family, ” said Pat.

The six rinks on the beautiful Southbroom green will each have a set of cricket stumps at one end and a scoring mat at the other.
One over comprises the three players each bowling two bowls at the stumps and then back onto the scoring mat. Each wicket results in runs deducted from the opponent’s tally.

The format is flexible enough to permit two games to be played in an afternoon. The league will run for six weeks.
Cleve is a registered bowls coach and will give a quick heads up to the newbies as the tournament starts. Bowls will be provided.
There are still a few slots available, contact Cleve at 082 7835236 or email southbroombowls@gmail.com for more details.
