Tyler (7) challenges children to support SPCA

His mother, Lee said that Tyler shows his selflessness in acknowledging that all the support and donations 'really means a lot for the animals'.

At only seven, Tyler Algie is making a difference, to support animal welfare.
Recently, at the Southbroom Tennis Club’s, love your club community clean up, Tyler found a pretty wrapped box in a throw away pile.

It was then that he decided to collect money, food, dog toys, blankets and goods for the charity shop for the Lower South Coast SPCA.

The tennis club became the drop off point.

Five years ago, Tyler’s family adopted Rocket from the SPCA, and the pair have been inseparable ever since.

He started his fundraising initiative by posting a plea on the Southbroom Pets and Chats Group and walking the golf club asking people for donations, either big or small.
Tyler’s catchphase is ‘every bit counts’ and he got support from local boxing club, Box360 and anyone he bumped into.

The youngster was blown away by the support from the community, and he handed over a large pile of second hand books and many good quality items for the society’s charity shop, along with a whopping R2275.30 in cash recently.

His mother, Lee said that Tyler shows his selflessness in acknowledging that all the support and donations ‘really means a lot for the animals’.

This is not the end of the chapter for this child with a giving heart, he now challenges businesses and other children to better what he has raised so far.

“Giving and doing good should not just be at Christmas time,” he said. Also, adopting pets is a must, and helping the SPCA with their daily running costs is important.

Mike Davis of the LSC SPCA said the young man has blown them away – not only by his larger than life humble personality, but his strong passion for giving back and helping others.

The LSC SPCA isn’t government funded and relies solely on the support of the community. Davis pointed out that the organisation’s petrol bill alone is roughly R30 000 a month, besides the cost of wear and tear on their vehicles, or other operational expenses.

“Even the sponsor of a tank of petrol would be welcome,” added Davis.

Tyler will continue to collect for the SPCA, drop off items at the Southbroom Christmas Festival at Eyles Park by the tennis club on Saturday, December 17 from 11:00.
