Phoenix fraudster convicted in Port Shepstone Regional Court

Realizing police were hot on his heels, Tyson Jermaine Sathialall handed himself in.

When Tyson Jermaine Sathialall (28), who hails from Phoenix, failed to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on a charge of fraud his picture and details was circulated in the media after a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

Realising police were hot on his heels, he handed himself in.

On November 15, he was convicted and sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court to a fine of R10 000 or six months’ imprisonment plus three years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of an offence in which dishonesty is an element during the period of suspension.

Sathialall was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

During October 2021, a resident from the KZN South Coast met an online buyer (Sathialall) on Facebook who was interested in his Opel Corsa vehicle. On further communicating, it was agreed that he would swap his vehicle for a Nissan NP200.

The buyer and seller met and documents were signed and exchanged.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge said the buyer of the Nissan decided to check the vehicle registration particulars since he no longer wanted the bakkie. It was then discovered that it had been stolen in Umlazi.

The vehicle registration documents were fraudulent as well.

Sahialall had sold the Opel Corsa to a dealership in Phoenix where it was recovered by police after the complainant opened a case.

This is not the end for Sathialall as he is facing a number of other charges in cases in Bellair and Verulam for which he has yet to appear.

The investigating officer in this matter was Detective Warrant Officer Muzi.
