Medic swims out to rescue woman from car submerged in river

The vehicle plunged into the river after the driver lost control and ploughed through the bridge railing last Saturday night.

Glen Preston of Med-Evac had to go for a late night swim to rescue a woman from her car, which was floating in the Umzumbe River, on Saturday evening. He chose what he felt was the fastest method of saving her, diving in and swimming out to her.

Preston said the woman had been travelling from Hibberdene to Port Shepstone when she lost control of the vehicle. “She crashed through the bridge, taking about 30 metres of it with her, and then proceeded to drop into the river below,” he said.

“For me it was the easiest and fastest way to rescue her and get her out of the vehicle, ” he said.

Preston confirmed the woman had minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
